My name is Agnese Cigliano and I'll be the Secretary General for the 8th edition of this great MUN.
Let me start by telling you something about myself. I started my MUN journey in 2010,right at the 1st edition of the RomeMUN. After that, I've probably been affected by the very well known "MUN virus" and I have since attended several MUNs in Europe and overseas. These experiences truly changed the course of my study path as I became increasingly interested in international relations and from that point on, I started attending any international project I could get my hands on, like a semester abroad in Czech Republic or a study visit in US focusing on criminal law.
This is why I eventually understood that you don't value your MUN experience by the number of them you attended, but on the basis of what you learnt from them. And this is not only about research and negotiation skills but more specifically about your ability to understand the world around you and become an actor in a multicultural and globalised world. During the days of the simulation, you will learn how to shape the future you want and how you cannot reach this main goal without establishing a dialogue with your peers. This is why the organizing committee decided to focus on dialogue and youth empowerment for the agenda of RomeMUN 2017: we can conclude with no further doubt that these are the two main means to achieve development in our time. This is also why the international community as a whole is giving more attention to those. So, if you arrived at this point, by now you know you are part of a bigger picture and are at least intrigued to be part of it! From my side, I cannot wait to meet you all as delegates next March. I want to invite you and welcome you in taking part in this experience, I am sure that it will become an important step for each one of us. About all the other things, like the Rules of Procedure, the balance of powers or the compromises you will accept in order to make a resolution pass, you will learn by doing and I will learn myself as every MUN is a new challenge and a new source of knowledge.
Sir Winston Churchill once said “Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions.” If it's true, then we'll do a good job and we will all enjoy this path together next March in Rome and we will most definitely have fun!
